Fort Macleod council took a step last week toward rezoning property for a 12-unit multi residential building on 22nd Street.
Council gave first reading Dec. 13 to By-law No. 1947, which would change the zoning to residential multi unit, from residential.
The zoning change would effect one full lot and half the adjoining lot.
“The intent of this rezoning is to put in a future 12-unit multi residential building there,” director of operations Adrian Pedro told council.
The property is on 22nd Street, between Fourth and Fifth avenues.
“That would be a first for our community,” Mayor Brent Feyter said. “Putting 12 unit building on a lot and a half would be very exhaustive.”
Feyter said the by-law would have restrictions on the height of a building.
The mayor noted multi unit buildings are often located in a transitional area between commercial development and residential.
Feyter wondered about putting a multi unit building in the middle of a residential area.
“Planning did look at this and from what I understand, there’s not really any concerns,” Pedro told council. “The proposal that was submitted would fit in the area so there were no major concerns from that perspective.”
In addition to giving first reading to the by-law, council set a public hearing for 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10.
“This is first reading so there will be a little bit of public engagement,” Feyter noted. “People will be able to speak for or against it.”
Anyone who wants to make a presentation about By-law No. 1945 during the public hearing must contact the Town Office by 4 p.m. Jan. 3.
