The Alberta government last week delivered funding for a joint project involving the Town of Fort Macleod and MD of Willow Creek.
Livingstone-Macleod MLA Roger Reid on Thursday delivered a $200,000 Alberta Community Partnership program grant to the G.R. Davis Administration Building.
The grant will fund a regional storm water study planned by the two municipalities.
“It’s great to have both the town and MD working together,” Reid said.
Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver in a letter to the mayor pointed out the Alberta Community Partnership program is designed to encourage strengthened relationships between municipalities.
The grant also encourages municipalities to co-operate when possible on service delivery.
“By working in partnership with our neighbours, we create opportunities that support economic development and job creation,” McIver wrote. “Together, we help build vibrant, resilient communities for the benefit of all Albertans.”
The regional storm water management plan will identify overland drainage and flooding issues and will include management strategies for watersheds impacting both municipalities.
The work is to include the following:
- Data collection and review of such background information as climate data, flow and water level monitoring, and an inventory of existing drainage infrastructure.
- Topographic information and digital models that identify flooding mechanisms.
- Hydrologic analysis and development of models such as directional rainfall run-off.
- A storm water management plan and framework to address the impact on development and other municipal infrastructure requirements.
Town of Fort Macleod chief administrative officer Anthony Burdett told Reid the study will help address flooding in town during heavy rainfall.
“It’s mostly a study of the way the water flows at the south end of town,” Burdett said.
The study is tied to potential development at the south end of Fort Macleod.
The Alberta Community Grant is fully funding the project, so there is no matching contribution from the town or MD of Willow Creek.
