Volunteers give Fort Macleod a spring cleaning

Fort Macleod was in need of spring cleaning following a long winter.

A group of volunteers provided that service last Wednesday during the annual community clean-up.

About 71 people turned out for the clean-up organized by the Fort Macleod Environment Committee.

Everyone met at the G.R. Davis Administration Building, where they were provided garbage bags and assigned an area to collect trash.

The turn-out — aided by a mild day in a stretch of windy and cold conditions — surpassed previous community clean-ups.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic the annual clean-up would attract 50 to 60 volunteers.

Last year, on a cold and windy day, only 20 people turned out.

The volunteers aged 10 to 70-plus years combed the banks of the Oldman River, parks, green spaces, ditches and other areas collecting garbage.

The result was 74 large garbage bags filled with trash and turned in for disposal by the Town of Fort Macleod public works crew.

Volunteers and staff were treated to a barbecue at the end of the community clean-up at the G.R. Davis Administration Building.
