Fort Macleod youths lead FCSS summer program

Two Fort Macleod youths are working to make the summer of 2022 a great one for local children.

Twenty-year-old Sheridan George and 17-year-old Lydia Nelson are the new summer program co-ordinators for Fort Macleod Family and Community Support Services.

The two F.P. Walshe school grads have plenty of fun lined up through July and August.

“I hope the children get the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities,” Sheridan said. “I hope they all feel comfortable, welcome, and enjoy their time with us.”

“It is also an opportunity for the children to learn different things, and improve their social skills by interacting with others.”

Lydia encouraged parents to check out the summer program guide and calendar that are available.

“Overall, we want to provide a place where kids feel comfortable and can get out of the house to have fun, with each other and with their families.” Lydia said.

This week, for example, there is natural playground crafts from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Thursday, July 14.

Also on Thursday, FCSS is hosting the Family Silly Olympics at 6 p.m.

On Tuesday, July 19 there is a Teddy Bear Picnic from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and an Alice in Wonderland Tea Party from 3-5 p.m.

Regular offerings include Make It Mondays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 2-4 p.m.

Lydia Nelson is enrolled in post-secondary to become a dental hygienist.

In addition there are scavenger hunts, parachute games, Kindness and Treats, random relays and science experiments.

In August, scheduled activities include Family Minute to Win It, Glow in the Park, Construction Day, Ice Cream Social, Slip and Slime and a lemonade stand contest.

Sheridan, who is in the education program at Medicine Hat College with plans to become an elementary or high school phys ed teacher, saw the FCSS job as a natural fit.

“What interested me about the FCSS summer program position was the opportunity to work with children and families in our community,” Sheridan explained. “This job will give me more experience with children, planning, and being more creative which will help me in my future career of teaching.”

Lydia is enrolled at Lethbridge College where she will take prerequisite courses for the Vancouver School of Dental Hygiene with plans to become a dental hygienist and work in Alberta.

Lydia was drawn to the FCSS job because it involved planning fun events and activities, and working with children — two of her favourite things.

“While this summer job doesn’t directly tie in with my career plans, I know the skills I gain will help me throughout my life and will encourage me to be an active member of my community wherever I end up,” Lydia said.

Sheridan and Lydia are enjoying their positions to this point and look forward to the rest of the summer.

“We can’t wait to continue doing this throughout the summer and we look forward to meeting you and your children,” Sheridan said. “Please reach out to us with any questions you may have.”

Lydia agreed.

“Make sure to bring your kids to our activities, because we are so excited to meet them.”
