Ducks still for sale as annual race day approaches

Fort Macleod Lions and Royal Purple are calling for a last-minute rush on ducks.

The two service clubs will hold their annual duck race joint fund-raiser at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 — but it’s not yet a sell-out.

“Ducks are selling a little bit slower than they were last year,” Royal Purple member Angie O’Connor said Thursday.

Both clubs are optimistic there will be a last-minute rush on ducks.

“We sure hope so,” Lion Michelle Harris said.

The Lions and Royal Purple had sold all 2,000 ducks in previous years to raise money to support their respective work in the community.

The duck race offers two $1,000 cash prizes for the first and last ducks plucked from an O’Sullivan Concrete cement mixer.

Ducks are just $5 apiece and in addition to the two $1,000 prizes, offer a chance at a selection of other prizes.

“We’ve got some very generous donations from people, like always,” O’Connor said. “Macleod people always pull together.”

Those draw prizes include honey from Poelman Apiaries; tickets from the Empress Theatre; a $100 package from Kensington Arts; a can of sea foam from UFA; a pass for the Groom a Horse program at the Fort Museum; golf passes from Davis Dodge; a knife set from Scougall Motors; a picture and candles from Wall2Wall; five Teenburger combos from A&W; a $50 cheque from Bumper to Bumper; a cleaning kit from NAPA; a $25 gift certificate from Town and Country Liquor Store; a large inflatable duck from Larson’s Tire; a box of assorted items from Alberta Hardware; and a lantern from Red Apple.

The draw prizes will be handed out as ducks are plucked from the cement mixer.

The duck race takes place rain or shine at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 in the parking lot of Larson’s Tire on Main Street.

The duck race provides a lot of fun, and it’s for a good cause.

All the proceeds go back to the community from both clubs.

“People don’t have to be there in order to win,” O’Connor said. “We will track them down.”

Duck tickets are available from Michelle at Fort Pharmacy, Diane at Family Foods, Angie O’Connor at 403-330-6851 or from any Lions or Royal Purple member.

You can e-transfer payment to Michelle Harris at michharris55@gmail.com.

The Lions and Royal Purple will sell tickets until the race starts.
