Roger Reid will not seek re-election as MLA for Livingstone-Macleod.
Reid announced last week on social media that he had reconsidered his intention to seek re-election.
“After much personal wrestling and conversations with family and friends I have decided to withdraw my name from the United Conservative Party nomination for Livingstone Macleod,” Reid wrote. “While I hoped to serve a second term, I no longer feel it is possible for me to do so.”
A Claresholm resident, Reid was elected in April 2019.
Reid received almost 71 per cent of the vote as he defeated New Democrat Cam Gardener, the Alberta Party’s Tim Meech, Alberta Independence candidate Vern Sparkes, Liberal Dylin Hauser and the Green Party’s Wendy Pergentile.
“It has been a tremendous honour to represent the people of this riding as the MLA,” Reid said. “I have discovered many amazing places so close to home and it has been my privilege to meet with constituents from High River to the Crowsnest over the last four years.”
Reid is the latest UCP MLA who will not seek re-election, including former cabinet ministers Doug Schweitzer and Leela Aheer, Calgary-Fish Creek MLA Richard Gotfried, Drayton Valley-Devon MLA Mark Smith and Brooks-Medicine Hat MLA Michaela Frey.
Reid said he will continue to focus on the needs of Livingstone Macleod through the end of his term.
Reid said the last couple of years have been particularly challenging for Alberta.
“Neither I, nor our government have been perfect, but I believe the work we have done has put Alberta back on track,” Reid said. “We are stronger and in a better position to weather the current storms than we were four years ago.”
“There is still work to do. To move forward we must be a united movement to ensure a strong conservative government continues to lead the province. It is essential for our true prosperity.”
Reid promised to keep the concerns and the needs of Livingstone Macleod in front of Premier Danielle Smith and her cabinet until the next election is called.
The next Alberta election is scheduled for May 29, 2023.
