Warrant issued for arrest of break-in suspect

A warrant was issued Wednesday for the arrest of a man charged in connection with break-ins at area churches and non-profits.

The warrant was issued in Fort Macleod court of justice after a lawyer representing the accused withdrew as counsel.

Miranda Hlady, acting as agent for lawyer Justin Dean, said numerous phone calls and e-mails have gone unanswered.

“He cannot get instructions from this client,” Hlady told Justice Jerry Legrandeur.

Justice Legrandeur granted Dean’s request to withdrew as counsel, and issued a warrant for the accused’s arrest.

RCMP in August and September investigated break-ins at several places of worship and non-profit organizations, including Faith Community Baptist Church, United Church, Parallel Church, Anglican Church, Church of the Nazarene and My City Care in Claresholm.

The investigation resulted in the RCMP charging 31-year-old Cody Garth Gorrell, of no fixed address, with four counts of break, enter and theft.

Gorrell is also charged with six counts of mischief damage under $5,000, and two counts of shop breaking with intent.

Gorrell is further charged with three counts of theft under $5,000, and one count each of possession of a controlled substance, possession of break-in tools, possession of stolen property under $5,000, and failing to comply with a court-ordered condition.
