Semi sideswipes RCMP cruiser

A Claresholm RCMP cruiser was hit by a semi Friday on Highway 3 while conducting a traffic stop.

The RCMP officer was conducting a traffic stop about 12:15 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Highway 2 north of Stavely.

A semi tractor-trailer unit struck the fully-marked RCMP cruiser, which had its emergency lights activated.

The officer was standing at the driver’s side door of the vehicle he had pulled over when the collision occurred. The officer received minor injuries as a result of flying debris. The driver of the vehicle in the traffic stop was not injured, although his vehicle was damaged.

An RCMP collision reconstructionist was called to the scene and northbound traffic encountered delays.

The investigation continues.
