Three events highlight town’s big weekend

An antique and gun sale, fund-raising walk in support of medical research and a show of vintage and custom vehicles will make for an action-packed weekend in Fort Macleod.

The Fort Macleod Antiques, Collectibles and Gun Show and Sale runs Friday and Saturday, June 16-17 at the Fort Macleod and District Sports Centre.

On Saturday, June 17 vintage and custom vehicles will roll into Fort Macleod for the annual Checkmates Car Club show ‘n’ shine on Main Street.

And at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17 hundreds of people will walk in the countryside north of Fort Macleod for the 25th A-T Walk for a Cure.

Antique and gun sale

Fort Macleod Chamber of Commerce has rented all of its 92 available tables for the two-day antiques and gun show and sale.

The show and sale runs from 2-8 p.m. Friday, June 16 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 17 at the Fort Macleod and District Sports Centre.

The antiques and collectibles vendors are bringing a wide variety of goods, including furniture, Pyrex, military, knives, Dutch cutting boards, comics, oil cans, signage, advertising and toys.

Gun vendors will offer a wide variety of new and vintage guns.

The dealers are coming from  across Alberta, B.C. and Saskatchewan.

Firearms specialist Terry Bryant will attend the Fort Macleod show to help buyers with the transfer of guns.

Fort Macleod Lions Club will operate the concession during the show and sale.

The Foothills Centre is supplying manpower to help the Chamber and vendors with set-up and take-down.

Alberta hardware is sponsoring a pancake breakfast for the antiques, collectibles and gun vendors on Saturday morning.

There will be automated teller machines (ATMs) at the Fort Macleod and District Sports Centre.

Planning is well in hand but the Chamber could still use more volunteers to sell tickets.

Car show

The Checkmates Car Club has its motor running for the annual Car Show and Shine on Main Street.

The exhibition of more than 100 vintage cars, trucks, motorcycles and tractors runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Main Street is closed to other vehicle traffic from Second to Third avenues so people can walk and view the vintage vehicles.

Entries in the Checkmates Car Club’s show will be reviewed by independent judges, with the Top 10 placings receiving a trophy and $100.

Vehicles entered by the Checkmates Car Club members are not eligible for judging.

A-T Walk for a Cure

More than 100 people will gather at Hilltop Dairy north of Fort Macleod on Highway 811 for a five-kilometre fund-raising walk.

Money raised by the event funds research into Ataxia-Telangiectasia, a rare genetic disease that attacks children, causing progressive loss of muscle control, immune system problems, and a high rate of cancer.

Children with A-T rarely live beyond their teenage years.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. with the walk getting under way at 11 a.m.

An after party promises free hamburgers, hot dogs, ice cream, silent auction, pony rides and bounce houses for children.
