Fort Macleod Mavericks host U13 hockey tournament

Fort Macleod Mavericks hosted seven other teams in the weekend Southern Showdown U13 hockey tournament.

The Mavericks opened round-robin in Pool B with Lethbridge Bisons, Pincher Creek Chinooks and Ponoka Stampeders.

Pool A had Okotoks Oilers, Calgary Inferno, Duchess Storm and Lethbridge Golden Eagles.

Ponoka 11 Mavericks 9

The Mavericks played their first game Friday night against Ponoka Stampeders in what proved to be a high-scoring affair.

When the last goal was scored, Ponoka Stampeders had edged the Mavericks 11-9.

Showing no ill effects from their trip south down the QE II, Ponoka stampeded out to a 5-2 lead in the first period.

The Stampeders maintained their three-goal lead through the second period, holding an 8-5 advantage after 40 minutes.

Fort Macleod pulled to within a goal in the third period before Ponoka reeled off three goals on their way to an 11-9 win.

Nate DeKok scored four goals and assisted on another for Fort Macleod, Michael Sweet Grass had a goal and three helpers and Madison Van Buuren had two goals and an assist.

Matthew McNab had a goal and an assist for the Mavericks and Layne Sharratt also scored.

Hayden DeKok and Pryce Schneider each picked up three assists on Fort Macleod goals and Kyle Gillingham had one.

Willy Orich faced 33 shots in goal for Fort Macleod.

Mavericks 14 Bisons 2

The Mavericks had another strong offensive outing Saturday afternoon as they blitzed Lethbridge Bisons 14-2.

The Mavericks led 9-0 after the first period and were in front 11-0 before Lethbridge got its first goal.

After the Bisons scored back-to-back goals the Mavericks closed out the game with three more goals.

Madison Van Buuren had five goals and an assist for Fort Macleod, Nate DeKok had two goals and four assists, and Pryce Schneider had two goals and two assists.

Matthew McNab had a goal and three assists, Ryder Nielson had a goal and an assist and Hayden DeKok also scored.

Kyle Gillingham picked up four assists, Cooper Sharratt had two and Michael Sweet Grass had one.

Willy Orich was in goal for the win.

Mavericks 10 Chinooks 10

The Mavericks closed out round-robin Saturday night with yet another high-scoring game as they tied Pincher Creek Chinooks 10-10.

The tie left the Mavericks out of the tournament playoff round, as they needed a win to slip into second place in their pool.

Fort Macleod led 4-2 after the first period and 7-5 after two.

The teams trade goals in the third period, with the Chinooks getting the tying goal with 19 seconds to play.

Nate DeKok was on fire as he scored seven goals and set up two others for the Mavericks.

Michael Sweet Grass had two goals and an assist and Layne Sharratt also scored.

Cooper Sharratt had two assists and Ryder Nielson, Hayden DeKok, Madison Van Buuren and Matthew McNab each had one.

Willy Orich handled the goaltending duties for Fort Macleod.
