Fort Macleod Mustangs won a pair of weekend Ranchland Hockey League games to stay unbeaten in regulation to start the season. The Mustangs have four wins and an overtime loss and hold down first place in the five-team league.
On Friday the Mustangs galloped into Stand Off and rode off with a 9-5 win over Kainai Chiefs. The Mustangs were at home on Saturday to edge the second-place Lethbridge Lightning 4-3.
Next action for the Mustangs is Friday, Dec. 1 at 8:30 p.m. in Nanton against the Palominos.
Mustangs 9 Chiefs 5
It was a wild shootout before a packed house Friday night as the Mustangs and Chiefs combined for 107 shots on goal. When the ice chips had settled, the Mustangs had downed the Chiefs 9-5.
The Mustangs took a 3-2 lead in the first period and increased it to 8-3 in the second period on their way to the 9-5 win.
Rylan Schuberg, Brandon Aab and Tanner Stovin each had two goals for the Mustangs and Ryan McLaughlin, Matt Forchuk and Justin Donahue each had one. Tanner Royal, Wilfred North Peigan, Willy David, Dalton Eagle Bear and Taylor Wells scored for Kainai. Devon Hardie was in goal for Fort Macleod, facing 55 shots.
Mustangs 4 Lightning 3
The Mustangs scored two goals early in the third period Saturday and held off the Lightning for a 4-3 win at Fort Macleod and District Sports Centre.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period and 2-2 after 40 minutes. Robbie McLean scored a powerplay goal 1 1/2 minutes into the third period and Stovin added another goal five minutes later to give the Mustangs all the offence they would need.
McLean and Stovin finished the game with a goal and an assist apiece, Brandon Aab got his team-leading ninth of the season and Jadon Porterfield got his third of the year.
Dylan Kempin, Joshua McCulloch and Kevin McNab each picked up an assist. Josh Wilson, Carson Beers and Leo Lacourciere scored for Lethbridge.
Aaron DeKok earned the win in goal for Fort Macleod as he made 47 saves. The Mustangs tested Lightning goalie Alex Sirard with 26 shots.
