Alberta launches free digital literacy program

The government is launching a free digital literacy program for people looking to develop basic digital literacy or improve existing skills.

The on-line program offers 19 courses at the beginner and intermediate levels.

“Improving digital skills will remove barriers for Canadians in the workplace and in their daily lives,” said Randy Boissonnault, federal minister of employment, workforce development and official languages.

The government of Canada, in partnership with the Province of Alberta, is using the Skills for Success initiative to invest in the Digital Literacy Program.

This initiative will provide access to training to use digital devices and browse the Internet safely.

Lessons are practical, focusing on foundational skills that every Internet user should have as well as how to stay safe on-line.

“Learning these skills, which are now essential to daily life, will surely improve the quality of life for Albertans,” Boissonnault said.

The program is designed for Albertans with little to no experience using computers but incudes a range of topics helpful to anyone looking to boost their digital literacy skills.

Each course can be completed in 30 minutes or less.

“As we deliver better, faster and smarter services to Albertans, digital literacy gives everyone the ability to choose how they want to interact with the world around them,” said Nate Glubish, Alberta minister of technology and innovation

To start the program, Albertans will need to create an account on the Digital Literacy Program Web site, www.alberta.ca/digital-literacy-program.

The beginner stream is designed for people with little to no experience using a computer.

It has 10 modules that outline basic concepts like using the Internet, setting up an e-mail address and sharing information on-line.

The intermediate stream is for people who want to grow their existing digital literacy.

It has nine modules that outline more complex concepts like understanding digital footprints, staying safe on-line and learning or shopping on-line.

Anyone who may require assistance can contact the Digital Literacy Program Help Desk at 1-888-839-9239 any day between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
