Fort Macleod Mustangs end 2024 on winning note

Fort Macleod Mustangs galloped into the Christmas break on a high note.

The Mustangs beat Cremona Coyotes 9-6 on Dec. 21 to extend their Ranchland Hockey League winning streak to two games.

The victory also boosted the Mustangs into third place, one point ahead of the Siksika Buffaloes.

The Mustangs are back in action Saturday, Jan. 4 when they host Lethbridge Lightning at 7:30 p.m. at the Fort Macleod and District Sports Centre.

Fort Macleod trails Lethbridge by four points in the standings, but the Lightning have three games in hand.

Mustangs 9 Coyotes 6

Fort Macleod broke open a tight game with four third-period goals Dec. 21 on their way to a 9-6 win over the visiting Coyotes.

The teams were tied 3-3 after the first period and 5-5 after 40 minutes of the high-scoring affair.

Cremona edged ahead with a powerplay goal early in the third, but it was all Mustangs after that as Fort Macleod scored four consecutive goals to seal the win.

Ryan Burrows was top scorer for Fort Macleod as he netted a hat trick and two assists and Tanner Stovin also had a big night with a hat trick and one assist.

Keston Henry had a goal and two helpers and Nate Keller and Jadon Porterfield each had a goal and an assist.

Jack Austin picked up two assists and Justin Donahue and Hayden Archibald had one each.

Joel Robinson and Justin Hessian had two goals each for Cremona and Braden Piaschewsky and Mark Wilson had one apiece.

Fort Macleod goalie Billy Twigg made 40 saves in the victory. Cremona goalie Terry Blanchard made 27 saves.
