The F.P. Walshe Flyers were unbeatable on their home court last weekend as they claimed the championship of the Blue and White tournament.
The Flyers won three straight games in the senior boys basketball event played Friday and Saturday at F.P. Walshe school.
Flyers 74 Hawks 49
A strong start Friday powered the Flyers to a 74-49 win over Matthew Halton Hawks in their first game of the tournament.
F.P. Walshe jumped out to a 22-6 lead in the first quarter and were never threatened, leading 42-26 at halftime and 65-36 after three quarters.
Ashten Khela scored 20 points for the Flyers and Hudson Bare Shin Bone had 18.
Payton Provost had 14 points for the Flyers, Ilia Korkunov had eight and Kingston Alexander had six.
Santiago Lopez scored three for F.P. Walshe, Payton Cervo and Joseph Boot each had two and Leo Cordes had one.
Hunter McMullen of the Hawks was the game’s top scorer with 23 points.
In other first round games, Chinook JV Coyotes beat Senator Gershaw Gators 70-54, Livingstone Sabres beat Brooks Buffaloes 70-42, and Immanuel Christian JV Eagles beat Noble Central Blades 71-35.
Flyers 61 Eagles 53
The win over Matthew Halton advanced the Flyers to a semifinal game Saturday afternoon against Immanuel Christian.
After a slow start that saw them trail 15-14 at the end of the first quarter, the Flyers pulled ahead 29-23 at halftime.
F.P. Walshe led 35-34 at the end of the third quarter and held off the Eagles to win 61-53.
Ashten Khela scored 25 points for the Flyers and Daniel Boot had 17.
Joe Boot, Kingston Alexander and Hudson Bare Shin Bone each had four, Ilia Korkunov had three and Leo Cordes and Payton Provost had two apiece.
In the other semifinal game, Livingstone edged Chinook 49-43.
Flyers 72 Sabres 41
The Flyers were dominant in the championship game Saturday night, outdistancing Livingstone Sabres 72-41.
The Flyers opened a 20-4 lead in the opening quarter and were ahead 34-25 at halftime.
F.P. Walshe held the Sabres to a single point in the third quarter to increase their lead to 51-26 on their way to the 72-41 win.
Scorers were not available for the championship game.
The third-place game was a barn burner, with Chinook edging Immanuel Christian 63-60.
On the tournament’s B side, Senator Gershaw beat Brooks 71-34 and Matthew Halton edged Noble Central 58-53 to advance to the consolation final.
Senator Gershaw dominated in the consolation final, beating Matthew Halton 76-29.
In the game to decide seventh place, Noble Central beat Brooks 87-58.
