Foothills Liberals choose new candidate

John Bruinsma will represent the Liberal Party in the next federal election.

Bruinsma was acclaimed last month at the Liberal candidate for the Foothills constituency.

“With a strong focus on important new engagement with Canadians, the Liberal nominations process helps ensure we’re ready to re-elect our dedicated Liberal team in Parliament and continue to elect even more talented, diverse, and hardworking community leaders as Liberal MPs across Canada, whenever the next campaign eventually arrives,” national campaign co-chair Terry Duguid stated on the Liberal Web site.

“As we look forward to the important work ahead of us, the hope and hard work of Liberals across Canada will ensure our candidates and teams are ready to run competitive campaigns and earn another mandate from Canadians — including right here in Foothills.”

Bruinsma was born to immigrant parents in southern Alberta and grew up on a farm where he cultivated a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation of the “rewards of hard work.”

He later moved to Edmonton to complete his college education, earning diplomas in Instrumentation Engineering Technology, Computer Systems Technology, and Business Management Accounting from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.

Bruinsma completed a 35-year career as an engineering technologist in industrial automation and controls, working on diverse projects ranging from the oil patch to major petrochemical plants, as well as water and wastewater facilities throughout Alberta.

Included in his career as an engineering technologist, Bruinsma embraced the entrepreneurial challenge of owning and operating an EPC Industrial Controls company for 10 years, further honing his leadership and technical skills.

In the latter part of his career, Bruinsma transitioned to a specialization in cyber-security for critical infrastructure with a major international utility, ensuring the safe and secure operation of essential services.

Throughout his career, Bruinsma balanced practical experience with continuous education. His passion for learning has also led to him achieving numerous industry-specific certifications.

Even though Bruinsma’s career demanded a hectic pace, his family took every opportunity to partake together in all the outdoor activities available throughout the province, including hiking, skiing, and canoeing.

Now free from career demands, Bruinsma has returned to his roots in southern Alberta with his wife of 44 years to join their grandchildren and extended family in the area.

Bruinsma has always been involved in grassroot politics and is now looking to fully engage in the political system, aiming to give back to the community with his extensive experience and passion for others.
