Livingstone Range School Division has hired an educator with more than 25 years of experience as its new superintendent.
Sean Beaton will take over that role from Darryl Seguin, who is leaving for a new position as director and chief executive officer with Sun West School Division in Saskatchewan and whose Livingstone Range contract ends in September.
“The success of our schools begins with strong leadership,” school board chair Lori Hodges said in a news release. “By hiring a new superintendent, we are investing in the future of our students, our educators, and our community — ensuring that every decision is guided by experience, vision, and a deep commitment to excellence.”
At present, Beaton is assistant superintendent with Grassland Public Schools based in Brooks.
Beaton holds a bachelor of education degree from the University of Alberta, a certificate of ecological education from the University of Saskatchewan and a master’s of education in curriculum teaching and learning from the University of Calgary.
With Grasslands, Beaton provided leadership in student mental health, outreach and alternative education, educational technology, and inclusive education.
“Sean is wholly committed to making student-focused decisions, which aligns with our vision of ‘Every student, every day’,” Hodges added. “We are confident that he will build important relationships across the division, and lead us together into a strong future.”
Beaton said he has a passion for the unique strengths of rural communities, and is committed to leadership that is inclusive, innovative, and responsive to local needs.
“I am drawn to the work that connects system-level leadership with what matters most: the day-to-day experience of students, staff, and families,” Beaton said. “I believe innovation in rural settings comes from listening well, thinking collaboratively, and identifying opportunities that fit the unique context of each community.”
Beaton is excited to join Livingstone Range.
“I recognize and respect the leadership and deep commitment that have shaped LRSD to this point, and I am grateful to be building on that foundation,” Beaton said. “I look forward to listening, learning, and working alongside trustees, staff, students, families, and community partners to support a strong, vibrant future for Livingstone Range School Division.”
Beaton is married to Laurel and has two sons, Patrick, 22, and Andrew, 15.
Beaton will assume the role of acting superintendent in early August and become superintendent when Seguin’s contract ends in mid-September.
Seguin began his 20-year tenure with Livingstone Range in 2005 as principal of G.R. Davis school in Fort Macleod.
In 2010, Seguin became principal of Willow Creek Composite high school in Claresholm.
Two years later Seguin moved into central office as an associate superintendent, being promoted to the top job in 2017.
