Holiday Train cancels Fort Macleod stop

The highly-anticipated Fort Macleod visit by the Holiday Train is cancelled.

Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railway announced last week the Holiday Train will not stop as planned Sunday, Dec. 14.

The company blamed the decision on time constraints.

“While spreading holiday cheer, the core mission of the Holiday Train is to raise money and collect food to fight food insecurity in local communities,” the company said in a news release. “CPKC will make an increased donation to the Salvation Army serving Fort Macleod.”

CPKC encouraged Fort Macleod and district residents to attend a Holiday Train performance in Lethbridge on Saturday, Dec. 13.

The famed Barenaked Ladies will perform during that 7:15 p.m. stop Dec. 13 at Second Avenue N. and 12th Street.

Fort Macleod and district residents can also catch a performance by Barenaked Ladies at 10:45 a.m. at the Third Avenue railway crossing in Pincher Creek and at 12:45 p.m. at 69th Street and 17th Avenue in Coleman on Sunday, Dec. 14.

The Holiday Train tours Canada and the U.S. in November and December raising money, food and awareness for food banks.

Professional musicians play free 30-minute concerts from the brightly decorated train stage.

CPKC makes a donation to the local food shelf at each stop and encourages attendees to also donate.

Since it started in 1999, the Holiday Train has raised more than $26.1 million and 5.4 million pounds of food for community food banks.
