Fort Macleod Mavericks drive to win their own U18 hockey tournament ended early Sunday morning with a 4-2 loss to Creston Valley Attack.
The loss put a damper on a strong weekend of play by the Mavericks in the Southern Showdown that saw them go undefeated in round-robin.
The Mavericks were in the Red Division to start the tournament along with the Cochrane Rockies, Calgary Wolverines and Havre Ice Hawks.
The Blue Division was made up of Shaunavon Badgers, Creston Valley Attack, Coaldale Cobras and Ponoka Stampeders.

Fort Macleod scored three goals in under four minutes in the third period Friday to break open a tight game on their way to a 5-1 win over Cochrane Rockies.
The Mavericks dominated the first period but it was the Rockies who opened the scoring with just 48 seconds on the clock.
Fort Macleod tied the game mid way through the second period on a goal by Riley Maljaars, assisted by Cooper Sommerfeldt Heather.
Adrian Creighton’s goal mid way through the third period snapped the 1-1 tie and gave Fort Macleod its first lead. Lochlan Vandervalk assisted.
Just six seconds later Riley Maljaars scored, assisted by Haze Sharratt.
Almost four minutes later Haze Sharratt scored, assisted by Lochlan Vandervalk and Hunter Cross Child to make it 4-1 in Fort Macleod’s favour.
Strider Rabbit closed out the scoring with 2:50 to play, with Nate Mandel and Chase Provost picking up assists.
Fort Macleod goalie Nate Nelson made 19 saves to record the win. The Mavericks had 29 shots on goal.

Kale Slarks made 13 saves as the Mavericks blanked Havre Ice Hawks 9-0 on Saturday.
Fort Macleod jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead, added five more goals int the second and one more in the third.
Riley Maljaars topped the Fort Macleod scoring with five assists.
Lochlan Vandervalk had two goals and an assist and Hunter Cross Child scored twice for Fort Macleod.
Adrian Creighton and Carter McGlynn each had a goal and an assist and Strider Rabbit and Ciera Wemp each had a goal.
Haze Sharratt, Nate Mandel and Nathan Coast each had an assist.

The Mavericks wrapped up round-robin Saturday night by doubling Calgary Wolverines 4-2.
Fort Macleod took a 2-0 led into the third period and traded goals with Calgary over the final 20 minutes to preserve the 4-2 victory.
Adrian Creighton scored two first-period goals just 25 seconds part and then assisted on the two third-period goals.
Hunter Cross Child had two goals and an assist and Carter McGlynn and Wanderlei North Peigan had one assist apiece.
Nate Nelson was back in goal for the Mavericks, making 26 saves in the win.
Attack 4 Mavericks 2
Their first-place finish in the Red Division sent the Mavericks into a semifinal game Sunday morning against Creston Valley Attack.
The Attack opened a 3-0 lead and fought off a Mavericks rally for a 4-2 win to advance to the final.
Jasper Sharratt had a goal and an assist for Fort Macleod and Haze Sharratt also scored.
Cooper Sommerfledt Heather, Riley Maljaars and Carter McGlynn picked up assists.
Fort Macleod goalie Kale Slarks made 40 saves in the loss.
In the tournament championship game, Shaunavon Badgers edged Creston Valley Attack 6-5.
