Fort Macleod residents should know early next month who will build the $122-million Alberta Public Security and Law Enforcement Training Centre.
Three companies have submitted their design-build proposals to the provincial government.
“The target date to award the contract for construction is June 7,” Fort Macleod Mayor Shawn Patience said.
Patience provided council with an update May 14 about the police college project.
PCL Construction Ltd., Cana Management Ltd. and Bird Design-Build Construction Inc. are the three companies selected by the province to submit bids to build the police college.
They were shortlisted from nine companies that answered the government’s request for qualifications.
The province intends to have the police college open Sept. 2, 2014.
The Alberta Public Security and Law Enforcement Training Centre is to train 250 police recruits, 250 sheriffs and corrections officers, 250 community peace officers and 600 professional development students each year.
The police college will be built on a site 2.1 kilometres south on Highway 2 from the junction of Highway 2 and Highway 3.
There will be a main building with a reception area, student lounge, senior officer lounge, board room, offices, exercise room, food preparation area and dining room.
The main building will also have classrooms, a combat room, gymnasium, locker rooms, computer rooms, driving simulation room and jogging track.
Residences for recruits will be built on the campus.
There is also to be a scenario room, which includes a courtroom, booking area and cells, and other rooms in which mock scenarios can be staged for training.
The police college will have indoor and outdoor shooting ranges, a driving track, a wooded area for scenario training, and a farm yard and urban area for scenario training.
