The 2012 Southern Alberta Summer Games kicked off in Raymond Wednesday with hundreds of athletes converging in the small town to compete in 19 sports and leisure events.
Opening Ceremonies of the three-day event kicked off Wednesday evening at Raymond High School, capping off a full day of games activities.
Athletes from the County of Warner lead in the medal count after the first full day of competition. They accumulated 43 medals, including 14 gold medals.
In second place is Cypress County with 38 medals and taking third is the MD of Taber with 36 medals — including 15 gold, the most after day one.
In the total points category, the MD of Taber is in top spot with 954 points, the City of Lethbridge is second with 940 points and the County of Warner is third with 732 points.
Day 2 competition is in athletics, basketball, badminton, beach volleyball, cribbage, cycling, golf, mini soccer, tennis and baseball.
Following are the results of MD of Willow Creek athletes on the first day of competition:
Bantam boys 800-metres — Sean DeVisser, gold; Layton Taylor, 5th.
Bantam girls 800-metres — Shayna Jones, bronze; Cassandra Klaas, 7th.
Bantam boys javelin — Tyler Jones, silver.
Bantam boys long jump — Sean DeVisser, 5th.
Bantam boys shot put — Layton Taylor, silver; Tyler Jones, bronze.
Mighty Mite girls 50-metres — Emily Hall, 4th
Mighty Mite girls high jump Emily Hall, gold.
Pee Wee boys 200-metres — Quinten Taylor, 4th.
