Fort Macleod Christians staged a symbolic journey in the footsteps of their saviour Friday.
Close to 80 people from several Fort Macleod churches turned out for the first outdoor Way of the Cross procession since the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The journey we are about to take is a special one,” Evelyn McTrowe read as participants gathered on the steps of Holy Cross Church. “It is a journey that has already been made for us by Jesus.”
“However, this is not simply a journey that Jesus made, but rather a journey that we all continue to make each day of our lives.”
The Way of the Cross procession moves through the stations of the cross, stopping at each wooden cross to commemorate a moment in Christ’s journey to crucifixion.
Chris Adamiak and Migs Duran took turns carrying the large wooden cross adorned with a barbed crown.
Small wooden crosses had been posted at locations behind the Fort Museum, the fire hall and on the streets adjacent to Holy Cross Church.
The procession moved slowly, with songs along the way and readings at each cross.
At the end of the walk participants again gathered in front of Holy Cross Church, where they heard a final message.
“We have journeyed these steps in a spirit of prayerful hope. When we unite our sufferings and difficulties to those of our Lord Jesus Christ, our sadness and distress will eventually change into joy, vindications, healing and peace.”
“Though we may bear the scars of our hurts, we will no longer be prisoners of fear, for we have triumphed through the victory of the cross and resurrection.”
