Explore the world of theatre with Empress summer camps

After a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Empress Theatre will once again offer day camps throughout the summer.

The camps will help young people express their creativity and ideas, explore new talents and make new friends.

Through theatre games, movement and vocal exercises, young thespians will build their self-esteem and confidence.

At the end of each week, campers get to share their learnings and creations during a performance for their family and friends.

Full-day and half-day camps are available to accommodate children aged six to 17 years.

This year’s camp staff include Katelyn Heidinger as co-ordinator, as well as Eva Gatner and Brynn Norton as instructors.

Summer 2023 camps are as follows:

Stories with Character — Ages eight to 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 10-14.

Campers will spend mornings doing creative activities focusing on acting and storytelling.

They will work together with instructors to create, rehearse and perform an original short play.

Performance will be Friday, July 14 at 4 p.m.

Puppet Adventures — Ages six to 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 17-21.

Campers will find, build, make, and invent their own puppet — find its voice and character and show it off.

Kids will learn many new things in this half-day camp and have fun too.

They will be able to take their puppet home and keep it forever.

Performance will be Friday, July 21 at 1 p.m.

Musical Theatre Triple Threat: Act, Sing, Dance — Ages 10-17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 24-28.

Triple Threat campers will explore a variety of disciplines and work on scenes that will appear in the performance at the end of the week.

Performance will be Friday, July 28 at 4 p.m.

Reader Theatre — Ages six to 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  July 31 to Aug. 4.

Bring your favourite storybook to camp and put a scene from it on the stage.

The acting out of dialogue helps participants improve their vocabulary, comprehension and retention in a safe, fun and collaborative setting.

Performance will be Friday, Aug. 4 at 1 p.m.

A Forgotten Fairytale — Ages 10 to 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 14-18.
