The F.P. Walshe Flyers edged St. MIke’s Dragons in three sets Saturday night to win the championship of a junior high A girls volleyball tournament.
The Flyers lost only one set on their way to victory in the tournament at F.P. Walshe school.
The A girls are Lexi Beer, Leslie Bruised Head, Savannah Cervo, Ashlynn DeKok, Presley DeKok, Addy Nelson, Rhyan Popl, Cassie Rippin, Jaya Sharma, Kaylin Three Persons, Addy Van Herk and Lilly Vanee.
The Flyers started the tournament in a pool with Coalhurst Crusaders, Matthew Halton Hawks, Willow Creek Composite 2 Cobras and Picture Butte Queens.
The Flyers opened the tournament with a 25-23 and 25-13 sweep of Coalhurst.
In their next match, the Flyers swept Willow Creek Cobras 25-12 and 25-12.
F.P. Walshe was equally dominant against Matthew Halton, sweeping the Hawks 25-19 and 25-11.
The Flyers extended their winning streak in their final round-robin match, beating Picture Butte 25-23 and 25-12.
Pool B was made up of F.P. Walshe’s other A team, Noble Central Blades, Willow Creek Composite 1 Cobras, St. Mike’s Dragons and County Central Hawks.
The A2 Flyers are Taya Boot, Lydia Burdett, Kinsley Herweyer, Faith Hewlett, Alexandra Mariano, Madison McNab, Ashlynn Oberkirsch, Bryleigh Provost, Layne Sharratt, Kenni Smith, Alexa Van Herk and Neveyah Fox.
Flyers 2 earned a split with Noble Central to start the tournament, winning 25-19 but losing the second set 25-16.
In their second match, the Flyers 2 came out on the short end of 25-12 and 25-19 scores against Willow Creek.
Flyers 2 took on St. Mike’s in their next match, getting swept 25-9 and 25-14.
County Central swept Flyers 2 by scores of 25-21 and 25-13 to close out round-robin.
F.P. Walshe (8-0) placed first in Pool A, followed by Matthew Halton (6-2), Coalhurst (3-5), Willow Creek Composite (2-6) and Picture Butte (1-7)
St. Mike’s (7-1) placed first in Pool B, followed by Willow Creek Composite (6-2), Noble Central (3-5), County Central (3-5) and F.P. Walshe (1-7).
In the semifinals, the Flyers beat Willow Creek 25-13 but the Cobras battled to win the second set 25-22. In the third and deciding set the Flyers won 15-10.
St. Mike’s won the othe semifinal, sweeping Matthew Halton 25-7 and 25-21.
In the third-place match Matthew Halton swept Willow Creek 25-13 and 25-14.
F.P. Walshe and St. Mike’s met for the championship, with the Flyers winning the first set 25-22 and the Dragons winning the second 25-23.
The Flyers prevailed 15-13 in a hard-fought tiebreaker to win the title.
