Flyers fourth in Blue and White

F.P. Walshe Flyers had a win and two losses as they settled in fourth place in their own Blue and White senior girls basketball tournament.

The Flyers opened the eight-team tournament Friday with a win over Winston Churchill JV Griffins, but lost to Vauxhall Queens and St. Mary’s Auroras on Saturday.

Other teams in the two-day tournament were Kate Andrews Pride, Matthew Halton Hawks, Willow Creek Composite Cobras and St. Mike’s Dragons.

Flyers 57 Griffins 32

The Flyers soared to a convincing 57-32 win over Winston Churchill JV Griffins on Friday to open the tournament.

The Griffins led 14-13 after the first quarter but the Flyers tied it 24-24 at halftime.

A strong third quarter gave the Flyers a 38-28 lead that they never relinquished.

Tess Provost cut the cords for 16 points to lead the Flyers and Emilia Iwen had 13.

Sloane Grier and Allisa Ross each had eight for the Flyers, Taylor Broderson had five, Lalaine Mendoza had four, Jana Grau had two and Kappy Many Fingers had one.

Vi-Queens 77 Flyers 30

The win propelled the Flyers into the semifinal Saturday afternoon against Vauxhall Vi-Queens.

Vauxhall had advanced by beating St. Mike’s Dragons in the opening round.

Vauxhall took a 21-10 lead in the opening quarter and were in front 39-12 at halftime.

Lalaine Mendoza scored 11 points for F.P. Walshe, Tess Provost had six and Allisa Ross had five.

Emilia Iwen and Taylor Broderson each had three points for the Flyers and Kappy Many Fingers had two.

Auroras 79 Flyers 38

The loss to Vauxhall sent the Flyers to the third-place playoff Saturday night against St. Mary’s.

St. Mary’s set the tone early as they pulled ahead 19-6 in the first quarter and led 44-19 by halftime on their way to a 79-38 win.

Emilia Iwen was the Flyers top scorer with 17 points.

Lalaine Mendoza had eight, Taylor Broderson had six, Zoe Nelson and Jana Grau each had two and Azumi Mariquitas, Sloane Grier and Allisa Ross each had one point.

In the consolation final St. Mike’s beat Willow Creek Composite 55-39 and in the seventh-place playoff, Winston Churchill beat Matthew Halton 66-44.

In the tournament championship game Saturday night, Vauxhall beat Kate Andrews 38-29.
