The F.P. Walshe Flyers started the 2022 senior boys volleyball season with an impressive showing in their own tournament.
The Flyers beat Picture Butte Sugar Kings on Friday night to win their own tournament at F.P. Walshe school.
The senior Flyers are John Pineda, Jared Gurney, Theo McDougall, Mathias Rippin, Zach Grant, Ben Oosterwijk, Nate Keller, Ryan Burrows, Sandro Brussee and Hayden Archibald.
The Flyers opened the one-day tour- nament in a pool with Coalhurst Trojans and Picture Butte Sugar Kings.
The other pool was made up of the junior varsity Flyers Noble Central Blades and Matthew Halton Hawks from Pincher Creek.
The Flyers took on Coalhurst Trojans on Friday afternoon in the first match of the tournament.
The Flyers won the first set 25-19 and prevailed in a fierce battle in the second set, winning 30-28 to sweep the Trojans.
After a short break, the Flyers were back on the court to play Picture Butte Sugar Kings in their other round-robin match.
The Flyers opened the match with a 25-18 win in the first set, but the Sugar Kings battled to win the second set 25-20 to split the match.
In their other match, Picture Butte swept Coalhurst 25-18 and 25-19.
Picture Butte and F.P. Walshe tied for top spot in their pool with identical 3-1 win-loss records.
The Sugar Kings won the tie-breaker to take first place.
The JV Flyers played Coalhurst to decide who would play the senior Flyers in the semifinals, with Coalhurst winning 25-15 and 25-21.
In the semifinal match, the senior Flyers handled Coalhurst to advance to the finals.
Their opponent in the championship game was Picture Butte Sugar Kings, who beat Matthew Halton in the other semifinal.
The Flyers opened the title match with a decisive 25-18 win over the Kings in the first set.
It was closer in the second set, but the Flyers won 25-22 to claim the championship.
In the third-place playoff, Coalhurst won the first set 25-10 over Matthew Halton and completed the sweep with a 29-27 win in the second set.
In the consolation final, Noble Central swept the JV Flyers 25-18 and 25-19.
