Folk-pop ensemble Good Lovelies harmonize at the Empress

Counted among Canada’s brightest musical lights, Good Lovelies are guitar-wielding songwriters and queens of the goose bump–raising three-part harmony, and they’re making their way to the Empress on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

This Juno Award-winning folk-pop trio have created engaging vocal harmonies for nearly two decades, mining the complex feelings experienced by women who have come to ponder some of the big questions of life.

The group’s members, Caroline Brooks from Whitby, Ont. (vocals, acoustic and electric guitars), Kerri Ough from Port Hope, Ont. (vocals, acoustic guitar, banjo, keyboard) and Susan Passmore from Cobourg, Ont. (vocals, acoustic guitar, bass, percussion, keyboard) were all solo artists when they came together in 2006 to perform at a Christmas concert in Toronto.

The three subsequently decided to continue working together, releasing their debut EP, Oh My, in 2007.

They released their first full-length album, Good Lovelies, in 2009, and followed up with the Christmas-themed EP Under the Mistletoe later the same year.

Their album Good Lovelies won Roots and Traditional Album of the Year — Group at the 2010 Juno Awards.

In February 2018 they released the digital version of their album, Shapeshifters, which featured a shift from their usual folk to a more pop music sound.

We Will Never Be the Same, the group’s fifth full-length studio album, was released in fall 2023 and nominated for a Juno earlier this spring.

The album is both a return to a more elemental, acoustic- based musical platform reaching back to the early days of the Good Lovelies, as well as an immersive emotional experience crafted by three seasoned songwriters who bring their own real-life stories in all their dynamism and messy complexity to the fore.

In April 2024, Good Lovelies released the collaboration album Penny Penguin with beloved Armenian Canadian singer-songwriter and author Raffi.

Good Lovelies have toured internationally and across North America, delighting audiences with their compelling harmonies, and have been nominated for and won Canadian and Ontario Folk Music Awards, including the ACTRA RACS Recording Artist of the Year Award from the Ontario Folk Music Awards in October 2024.

Come enjoy one of Canada’s most accomplished harmony trios at the Empress Theatre.
