One of the original Crazy Canucks is keynote speaker at the Willow Creek Gospel Jamboree this weekend in Granum.
The jamboree runs from Friday, July 22 to Sunday, July 24 at Granview Recreation Park in Granum.
Jungle Jim Hunter, a member of the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, is featured during the interdenominational service Sunday, July 24.
Hunter moved to Calgary from Shaunavon, Sask, at the age of 12 and got hooked on downhill skiing.
In 1970, at the age of 16, Hunter was a member of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team where he became known as Jungle Jim for his aggressive style.
Hunter rose to prominence when he placed ninth in a World Cup downhill race in Switzerland during the 1970-’71 season.
In 1972 Hunter became the first Canadian to win a World Championship medal when he earned bronze in the combined event.
That same year, Hunter won both the Canadian and U.S. giant slalom titles.
In 1975-’76 Hunter placed in the Top 10 four times in World Cup downhill events.
At the 1976 Winter Olympics at Innsbruck, Hunter placed sixth in the combined and 10th in downhill.
In 1977 at the Sheel Cup, Hunter won his seventh consecutive giant slalom title.
The gospel jamboree is marking its return after a two-year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The jamboree line-up includes the Fehr Family Band, Prairie Joe, Roset and the Fraser Valley Quartet.
The event kicks off Friday at 5 p.m. with a chili dinner in the concession, followed by a concert at 7 p.m.
The concession will serve breakfast burritos from 9-11 a.m. Saturday.
The day’s first concert gets under way at 10 a.m., with an afternoon concert at 1:30 p.m. and an evening concert at 7 p.m.
The Granum Christian Reformed Church will serve a free pancake breakfast from 8-9:30 a.m. Sunday.
The Sunday morning service featuring Hunter as guest speaker starts at 10 a.m.
