Gazette best in class for fifth straight year

The Macleod Gazette is the best newspaper its size in Alberta for the fifth year in a row.

The Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association on Friday named the Gazette the Best Overall Newspaper in Class A.

The Gazette received four other awards and one honourable mention during the AWNA’s annual convention at the Chateau Lacombe in Edmonton.

High Prairie South Peace News placed second for Best Overall Newspaper in Class A, which includes newspapers with a circulation under 1,100 copies. Provost News placed third.

The Gazette also placed first in its category for Best Editorial Page. High Prairie South Peace News was second and Vauxhall Advance was third.

The Gazette also won first place for Best Front Page. High Prairie South Peace News was second and Slave Lake Lakeside Leader was third.

Completing a clean sweep of the General Excellence Awards, the Gazette placed first for Best Sports Pages. High Prairie South Peace News was second and Slave Lake Lakeside Leader was third.

Gazette editor Frank McTighe also picked up a third-place award for Best Sports Story for his story on how the COVID-19 pandemic ended hockey player Amy Craig’s career early.

McTighe also received honourable mention for Best Photo Essay for his photos of the Peigan Friends Along the River annual fish rescue.

Other General Excellence award winners for Best Overall Newspaper were Grande Prairie Town and Country News, Class B; Rocky Mountain Outlook, Class C; and St. Albert Gazette, Class D.
