Junior B Flyers place second in tournament

F.P. Walshe Flyers soared to second place Friday in their own junior high B girls volleyball tournament.

The Flyers were flying high in the one-day tournament before they got burned by the Raymond Comets in the championship match.

The Flyers are Hannah Alexander, Carys Boot, Natalie Donahue, Sarah Duffy, Denae Feyter, Zoe Grant, Payton Gray, Emma Grier, Bella Hardy, Keaira Henderson, Keyla Kerr, Rowan O’Connor and Tessa Van Hierden.

The Flyers started the tournament in a pool with Matthew Halton Hawks from Pincher Creek and Noble Central Blades from Nobleford.

The other pool was composed of Raymond Comets, Willow Creek Composite Cobras from Claresholm and St. Mike’s Dragons from Pincher Creek.

In their first match Friday afternoon the Flyers swept Matthew Halton 25-10 and 25-20.

After a short break the Flyers were back on the court at F.P. Walshe school to take on Noble Central Blades.

The Flyers were again dominant, sweeping the Blades 25-17 and 25-22.

Their record of four wins and no losses after round-robin put the Flyers in first place in their pool, followed by Matthew Halton (2-2) and Noble Central (0-4).

In the other pool Raymond also went 4-0 to finish in first place, followed by St. Mike’s (2-2) and Willow Creek Composite (0-4).

In the quarterfinals, Noble Central beat St. Mike’s and Willow Creek Composite beat Matthew Halton.

The Flyers took on Noble Central in one semifinal match, sweeping both sets 25-22 and 25-18.

Raymond knocked off Willow Creek in the other semifinal to advance to the tournament championship match against F.P. Walshe.

In the third-place playoff, Willow Creek Composite beat Noble Central.

Raymond opened the championship match with a 25-9 win over the Flyers.

The Comets claimed the championship with a 25-9 win over the Flyers in the second set.
