Rotary Club donates $10,000 for Fort Macleod skate park

Fort Macleod Skate Park fund-raising received an early boost last week from the Rotary Club.

Coun. Jim Monteith, who is president of Rotary, delivered the donation at council’s July 11 meeting at the G.R. Davis Administration Building.

“Today at the monthly Rotary meeting, we decided to donate $10,000 towards the skate park,” Monteith said.

Monteith presented the cheque to Town of Fort Macleod chief administrative officer Anthony Burdett.

Mayor Brent Feyter asked what prompted Rotary to donate to the skate park.

“We’re a pretty easy-going group,’” Monteith said. “If it’s a worthy cause we’re usually willing to help out.”

Council in June approved a $200,000 budget to build the skate park in the southeast corner of Centennial Park.

The $200,000 budget is to be supplemented by about $40,000 of community fund-raising.

Centennial Park was favoured as the location for its high profile, as well as its proximity to public washrooms.

The skate park’s design will be based on feedback received at open houses.

The top features based on that feedback are a fun box, half pipe, half bowl, pump track. volcano rollover, Euro gap and bank with hip.

It was recommended to the town the skate park should include an area for beginners.

People also asked for garbage cans and benches to be located at the skate park.

Signage, including rules for skate park use, will be posted in high profile locations, and it will be well-lit.

Once the design is finalized, construction could start as early as August, with completion in September.

“Thank you to the Rotary,” Feyter said. “That will go a long way.”
