A man who dedicated more than three decades to service as a member of Fort Macleod Fire Department was honoured last week.
Former fire chief Dick Schellhorn received a service medal during a ceremony at the G.R. Davis Administration Building.
“It’s a privilege to be here tonight to recognize an exceptional individual,” Livingstone-Macleod MLA Chelsae Petrovic said.
The presentation ceremony was part of Fort Macleod council’s regular meeting.
“Mr. Schellhorn’s impact goes far beyond titles and responsibilities,” Petrovic said. “His leadership, integrity and steady presence have been a source of strength for the department and for the entire community of Fort Macleod.”
Schellhorn joined the fire department in 1986 and held many positions with the volunteer service.
Schellhorn began as a firefighter, was promoted to captain, then deputy chief and finally chief.
Schellhorn also served as fire inspector for the Town of Fort Macleod.
“He has been there in the most difficult moments, calm, capable and committed, Petrovic said. “His legacy is not just written in years, but in lives protected and lessons passed on, and in the trust he built with those around him.”
Petrovic expressed gratitude on behalf of the members of the Alberta Legislature.
“Your dedication has made Fort Macleod a safer, stronger and more united place,” Petrovic said. “We are truly honoured to celebrate this milestone with you tonight.”
Petrovic presented Schellhorn with a Federal Service Award.
Mayor Brent Feyter also paid tribute to Schellhorn on behalf of the Town of Fort Macleod.
Feyter said he remembers as a child seeing Schellhorn at work on behalf of the fire department.
“We appreciate you on behalf of the Town of Fort Macleod for the many years you dedicated your life,” Feyter said. “I often think of the commitment that you’ve made. We can’t put a price tag on that.”
Feyter presented Schellhorn with a Town of Fort Macleod Service Award.
Fort Macleod Fire Chief Allen Zoeteman, congratulated Schellhorn on the awards.
“I’d like to thank you for your years of service, your friendship, your mentorship, and your leadership,” Zoeteman said. “It’s been greatly appreciated.”
Zoeteman and Capt. Perry Fraser presented Schellhorn with the traditional fire department gift of a framed chrome axe and engraved beer stein.
“It’s well-deserved Dick,” Zoeteman said. “Thank you for your longstanding service.”
