Volleyball player Jamie Brown honoured for academics

A Fort Macleod athlete is one of 42 Lethbridge College Kodiaks honoured for academic achievement.

Volleyball player Jamie Brown earned Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Scholar honours.

“Academic accountability is the first of our three pillars of success, along with community involvement and athletic excellence,” said Lethbridge College athletics and recreation services manager Todd Caughlin, who is from Fort Macleod.

To be named a National Scholar, student-athletes must earn a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.3 while also competing for a registered athletics team.

Only SAIT had more honourees than Lethbridge College among institutions in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.

“Having this many student-athletes earning National Scholar recognition speaks volumes about how our Kodiaks take care of business in the classroom and on the court,” Caughlin said.

Every Kodiaks sports program had multiple CCAA National Scholar honourees, led by the women’s and men’s volleyball teams, which each had eight.

Kodiaks student-athletes earned a combined 3.09 GPA in fall 2021.

“Every Lethbridge College student-athlete is made aware of our three pillars of success during the recruiting process and when they arrive to become a member of the Kodiaks,” Caughlin said. “Academics is a high priority here. It’s part of our culture.”

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks had 49 CCAA National Scholars in the 2019-’20 season.

The five foot 11 Brown, a graduate of F.P. Walshe school, completed her fourth season with the Kodiaks last year.

In May, Brown was one of five Kodiaks named Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Academic All-Canadians.

Brown in April was named the most outstanding player on the Kodiaks women’s volleyball team for the second year in a row.

In March Brown was named to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference south division all-conference team.

Brown led her team in kills with 188, fifth most in the conference.

Brown’s average of 3.55 kills per set was also third highest in the conference.

Her strong serve gave opposing teams fits all season, as she led her team in service aces with 21.

While Brown’s offensive numbers were impressive, her commitment to strong defence was also critical to her team’s success.

Brown delivered 20 blocks, tied for second-most on the Kodiaks, while also accumulating an impressive 141 digs.

In her career, Brown has 466 kills and 525 digs.
