W.A. Day school students support food bank

On Dec. 13 the Grade 4 Student Lighthouse Team from W.A. Day school delivered a pick-up truck full of food to the Brocket Food Bank as the culminating event in their 2021 Holiday Food Drive.

The students at W.A. Day were challenged to try and donate 1,500 items of food in order to be rewarded with a movie and popcorn and a visit from Santa.

On the way to 1,500 items were levels that could be met with the reward of seeing their teachers show unusual talents, wear silly outfits or be a part of special events.

Lighthouse leaders organized, counted and collected food items brought into each classroom every day from Nov. 22 to Dec. 13.

The first level achieved at 200 items saw Mr. Patton wear four different wigs to cover his bald head.

This was followed by Mr. Walmsley wearing goggles and fins to school, Mr. Zoeteman performing fancy skateboard tricks, Mrs. Paskal drinking raw eggs and Mrs. Hansen playing a recorder through her nose.

Other level highlights were a Backstreet Teacher Airband, Mr. Potyuk and Mrs. Coast singing Dance Monkey, Ms. Harty in a ballet tutu, Ms. Young and Mrs. Gunderson reading a “Book with No Pictures” and Mrs. Feller being duct-taped to the gym wall.

Mr. Patton was up again having pies thrown in his face, Mrs. Cope was a hillbilly for a day and school principal Mr. Fender, a devout Oilers fan, having to don a Flames Jersey all day long.

The students and school community brought in more than 1,700 items to donate to the Brocket Food Bank which has only been in operation for one year.

All donations go directly to members of that community and were gratefully received by food bank director and co-ordinator Jody Little Wolf.

After loading and unloading the truck and the bags of food that didn’t fit that were on the bus the students toured the food bank that is housed in the Brocket Community Center.

Service and volunteerism is an outcome of the Grade 4 Health curriculum and a major component of the Leader In Me/7 Habits of Highly Successful Students that the WA Day school lives on.

This type of leadership experience is vital to developing productive and engaged student leaders and global citizens.

It feels good to help where help is needed especially during the Christmas season! We are grateful to be a part of this type of service project.

Student Lighthouse leaders are: Asher Dyck, Wyatt Smith, Corbyn Tobler, Mackenzie Van Hierden, Kendal De Kok, Vienna Nelson, Brody Nelson, Cooper Orr and Seth Shaw.
