John Herald Murphy, known as Jack, was born in Fort Macleod to Kathleen and Charles Murphy on Nov. 23, 1948. He was the second of six children and brother to Jim, Sue, Sharon, Maureen and Trish.

Jack went to school in Fort Macleod and graduated in 1966. After school Jack worked at the White Hall grocery store then went on to be employed by The Macleod Gazette while working with Cliff Moses, later becoming his partner.

Jack married his high school sweetheart Florence DeRosier on July 26, 1969 in Fort Macleod. They went on to have three children, Rhonda (married to Todd), Jeff and Andrew (married to Kaley).

In Jack’s spare time he loved to hike, play hockey, fish, go biking and anything outdoorsy. He spent many hours walking every day. He was involved in the community volunteering his time coaching soccer, hockey and baseball and was also involved in Cubs and Scouts.

Jack loved spending time with his grandkids Dakota and Jayden (Rhonda/ Todd), and Lexi and Mia (Andrew/Kaley) taking them on any excursions he could such as, hiking in Waterton and exploring the river bottom.

Jack took great pride in his newspaper in Fort Macleod and was there for 33 years before retiring. At this time he took up curling and was once again on the ice. He loved the socializing that came along with all the sports.

Jack got bored being at home following his retirement so he started working at Bouvry Exports in Fort Macleod and was there for 11 years while also running his commercial printing business Great Impressions Printing at home.

Jack started to decline and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease where he was taken care of by his wife Florence at home for a few years.

Jack eventually moved into Fort Macleod Extendicare where he resided for more than three years. On Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022, Jack passed away peacefully with his family by his side.
